Bonecas Cave is a natural sea cave formed by the erosion of the limestone cliffs by the relentless forces of the sea, wind, and sun. The cave is known for its two big openings/windows that open to the sea. If you use your imagination, the cave looks like a doll's head, with the holes being the eyes when viewed from the sea. This gives it its name, "A Boneca," which means "the doll" in Portuguese.

Bonecas Cave is located in the charming coastal town of Carvoeiro, Portugal. This cave is easily accessible by car and is a short walk from the parking lot. To get to this specific spot, leave the parking lot and go down the steps on the right side towards the Boneca Bar. Just past the bar, you will see black writing on the rocks that reads ‘A BONECA.’ Go through the tunnel beside the writing to reach this viewpoint. If you want to see the “Doll’s Head,” then you need to view the cave from the sea which is accessible by boat or kayak.
The best part about Bonecas Cave is that it’s FREE! It’s open 24 hours, has no gate or fence, and has free parking, allowing visitors to explore at any time of the day without a tour or booking.

Armação de Pêra Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the Algarve region of Portugal. The town is located near the N125 and A22 highways, making it easily accessible by car from various parts of the Algarve region. FREE parking areas are available near the beach, although they can fill up quickly during peak tourist seasons.
If you don’t have access to a car, there are local bus routes connecting it to neighbouring towns and cities in the Algarve, including Faro, Albufeira, and Portimão. Additionally, seasonal tourist shuttles operate during the peak summer months, providing transport to the beach. It's often possible to walk to the beach, especially if your accommodation is located near the coast.

It is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, characterized by its large dome-shaped opening at the top, which allows sunlight to filter into the cave, and if you get lucky enough you can see light rays. Inside the cave, you can admire the turquoise waters, sandy shores, and impressive rock formations sculpted by the erosive forces of the sea. Benagil itself is a picturesque village with a small beach, traditional whitewashed houses, and a handful of restaurants and cafes.

The Benagil Cave is located near the small fishing village of Benagil, hence its name. It's east of Carvoeiro and west of the larger city of Portimão, making it easily accessible from both locations. It's important to note that the inside of the cave is only accessible by water, which means you either have to take a boat or swim. However, swimming is not advised as the sea conditions can be unpredictable and dangerous.
One of the most popular ways to visit the Benagil Cave is by taking a boat tour from nearby coastal towns such as Lagos, Portimão, Carvoeiro, or Albufeira. Many tour operators offer guided boat excursions that include visits to the cave, allowing you to admire its beauty from the water. These tours typically involve visiting other caves as well.
Another option for accessing the Benagil Cave is a kayak tour or renting a kayak and paddling along the coastline. This allows for a more adventurous and intimate experience, as you can explore other sea caves and hidden coves along the way.
While it's not possible to enter inside the Benagil Cave on foot due to its location beneath steep cliffs, you can still enjoy scenic walks along the cliffs above the cave. There is a short trail that offers stunning views of the coastline and into the cave below.

Benagil Cave is the most popular excursion in the Algarve, and even though many companies organize tours and rentals, they usually sell out. To ensure the best experience, plan ahead by booking a boat tour or kayak rental in advance, particularly during the high season. Be prepared for crowds and wear suitable footwear for navigating slippery rocks or sand. I suggest getting a waterproof bag or phone case to protect your belongings from water and moisture.
Stay informed about sea conditions before embarking on a tour, as entry to the caves is dependent on the waves. Even with access to the cave not guaranteed, a boat tour here is worth it because of the breathtaking scenery and the possibility of seeing dolphins.
Cape St. Vincent, also known as Cabo de São Vicente in Portuguese, is a prominent headland known for being one of the most southwestern points of mainland Europe. Cape St. Vincent is located approximately 6 kilometres west of the town of Sagres and around 25 kilometres west of the city of Lagos. It is only accessible by car, and there is a FREE parking area near the lighthouse.
If you don't have access to a car or prefer a guided experience, numerous tour companies offer tours to Cape St. Vincent. These tours often include visits to other nearby attractions, such as the Fortaleza de Sagres (Sagres Fortress) or the nearby beaches. These tours provide transportation to and from the cape and informative commentary about the area's rich history and significance.

When visiting Cape St. Vincent, consider arriving early or later in the day to avoid crowds and witness stunning sunrises or sunsets. Bring layers of clothing and sturdy footwear to stay comfortable and protected from the wind, and remember to bring water to stay hydrated.
Respect the environment by adhering to posted guidelines, and explore walking trails cautiously, ensuring to stay on designated paths and away from cliff edges. If the site's entry is closed, be sure to walk around the coastline on both sides of the cape, as the views are just as good.
Praia dos Três Irmãos, or Three Brothers Beach in English, is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and was my favourite place I visited in this region. The beach gets its name from the three large rock formations that stand out from the sea, resembling three brothers standing side by side.
This is a must-visit beach renowned for its soft golden sands, which make it feel amazing to walk here barefoot. It has crystal-clear waters with marine life, making it an excellent spot for snorkelling. But be cautious of rough waves and rocky areas, especially during high tide.
It is also famous for its stunning rock formations, which create unique coves along the coastline, perfect for exploring during low tide without getting wet. What's even better is this beach connects with Praia da Prainha beach, making it feel like you're visiting multiple beaches in one trip.
📍Location and Access
Praia dos Três Irmãos is located near Alvor, approximately 5km west of Portimão and around 70km west of Faro. The beach is easily accessible by car. Visitors can take the N125 or the A22 highway to reach Alvor and then follow signs to the beach. There are parking lots available near the beach, although they can fill up quickly during peak tourist seasons.
While there are no direct public transportation options to Praia dos Três Irmãos, visitors can take a bus or taxi to Alvor from nearby towns such as Portimão or Lagos and then walk to the beach. Some tour operators also offer guided excursions to the area. If you're staying in Alvor or nearby areas, it's possible to reach Praia dos Três Irmãos on foot. There are walking paths and boardwalks that lead from the town to the beach, providing a scenic route for pedestrians.
As seen in the photos above, the iconic part of this beach is technically Praia da Prainha beach. Many people do not consider it a separate beach but rather an extension of Praia dos Três Irmãos. However, these two beaches are separated by a cliff and rocks. To get to Praia da Prainha beach, I reccomend parking in the parking lot at Praia dos Três Irmãos, as it offers the most parking. After leaving the parking lot, walk east towards the Sol e Sombra restaurant. Just past the restaurant, you will see the cliff that separates the two beaches. There is a small opening in the cliff near the water, and during low tide, you can go through where you just have to jump over some low rocks.
Or there is a path that takes you to the top of the cliff; once on top, you can follow it along to the top, continuing east towards Praia da Prainha, and you will reach a staircase that will take you to the bottom of the beach. At the top of the cliff that separates the two beaches is a restaurant built into the cliff. If opened, the restaurant has an elevator to take you down to sea level to access the beach.

For the best experience at Praia dos Três Irmãos, aim to arrive early to snag a parking spot, avoid crowds, or consider alternative transportation. While the beach offers fantastic water activities, don't miss exploring the paths on top of the rock formations for breathtaking views and photo opportunities. The rock formations and coves offer secluded spots and shade from the warm weather, perfect for relaxing and soaking in the area's natural beauty. Both beaches offer various amenities, including restaurants, cafes, and water sports rentals.
Catch the sunrise or sunset for an extra memorable experience—the coastline truly comes alive with vibrant colours. Some areas are rocky in the water, so consider wearing water shoes and keep an eye out for rockfalls, particularly near the cliffs. Be sure to check tide times to explore more of this area, and don't forget to visit the charming cliffside restaurant at Praia da Prainha—it's nestled between the rocks and offers a truly unique dining experience.
Marinha Beach, known in Portuguese as Praia da Marinha, is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal and even Europe. It was one of the most picturesque places I visited in the region and is renowned for its stunning natural scenery, featuring golden cliffs, turquoise waters, and distinctive rock formations. It is a must-visit spot, even if you're not a beach lover. The cliffs surrounding Marinha Beach are stunning and offer endless photo opportunities. In my opinion, they're even more beautiful than the beach itself, and I was drawn here for the incredible views rather than the beach vibes.
At Marinha Beach, you can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters and exploring the caves and grottoes that dot the shoreline. It is a popular destination for beachgoers seeking both natural beauty and tranquillity, and it has been recognized with various awards and distinctions for its outstanding landscape.
📍Location and Access
Marinha Beach is located near the town of Carvoeiro, about 17km east of Lagos and approximately 50km west of Faro. It is easily accessible by car; take the N125 or the A22 highway and follow signs to the beach.
A FREE parking lot is available near the beach, although it can fill up quickly during peak tourist seasons. Once the parking lot is full, the police close the only access road to the beach to prevent illegal parking and blocking of the surrounding roads. Unfortunately, there are no direct public transportation options for Marinha Beach.

When visiting Marinha Beach, consider arriving early to secure a spot and avoid the crowds, as it can fill up quickly. Before or after exploring the beach, be sure to walk around the clifftop paths that overlook it, which provide incredible views. You can also explore the unique rock formations and sea caves along the coastline, either on foot or through guided tours or rentals like kayaks or boat tours.
Enjoy swimming and snorkelling in the clear waters, and take advantage of the beach's facilities, including restrooms, showers, and a beachside restaurant. Remember to respect the environment by disposing of trash properly and avoiding damage to the local flora and fauna.
Ponta da Piedade is a stunning coastal rock formation renowned for its towering cliffs, sea caves, and rock pillars sculpted by the erosive forces of the sea over thousands of years. The name "Ponta da Piedade" translates to "Point of Pity" in English, possibly referencing the treacherous conditions faced by sailors navigating the area in ancient times. Ponta da Piedade is approximately 3km south of Lagos's city center. It is easily accessible via the EN125 or the A22 highway to Lagos and then follow signs to Ponta da Piedade. Near the cliffs, there are FREE parking lots, although they can fill up quickly during peak tourist seasons.
There are no direct public transportation options to Ponta da Piedade, but one of the most popular ways to explore this area is by going on a boat tour from the Lagos Marina. These tours take you along the coastline, allowing you to admire the rock formations and sea caves up close. Some tours also include stops for swimming or snorkelling in the clear waters.

To make the most of your visit to Ponta da Piedade, I suggest arriving early to avoid crowds and secure parking, or consider alternative transportation if parking is limited. Explore the area by walking along the boardwalks and trails, which offer incredible views of the coastline, or take a boat tour to explore the area from the water, getting close to the rock formations and sea caves. If exploring on foot, wear sturdy shoes and exercise caution near the edges, as the area is unfenced. Remember to bring sunscreen and lots of water, as there is not much shade along the cliffs, especially on hot days.
The Sagres Fortress, also known as the Fortaleza de Sagres in Portuguese, is a historic fortification that was built in 1943 near the town of Sagres. Sitting on top of towering cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the fortress holds significant historical importance. It is believed to have been a key site for Portugal's maritime exploration during the Age of Discovery in the 15th century. While the exact origins of the fortress are debated, it is commonly associated with Prince Henry the Navigator, who is believed to have established a school of navigation and exploration at Sagres.
Today, you can explore the fortress's ruins, including its walls, towers, and scenic viewpoints, while learning about its rich history and strategic significance in Portuguese maritime exploration. Sagres Fortress is located just south of the town centre of Sagres, which makes it one of the most southwestern points of mainland Portugal. If you're driving to the fortress, it is easily accessible and has FREE parking a few minutes' walk from the entrance. The fortress is also accessible by public transportation, with bus services connecting Sagres to nearby towns and cities.
Once you arrive at the fortress, you can explore it at your own pace, following marked pathways and trails through the historic site. Guided tours are sometimes available, offering insights into the fortress's history, architecture, and significance.

Praia do Alemão, or Alemão Beach in English, is a beautiful beach known for its soft golden sands, clear blue waters, and stunning yellow/orange cliffs that dominate the landscape. It is situated between Praia da Rocha and Praia do Vau, offering a slightly quieter and more secluded atmosphere compared to its neighbouring beaches.
It is great for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the rock formations and sea caves along the coastline. One of the best ways to explore this area is by paddle boarding or kayaking because there is a lot to discover near the rock formations. You can find hidden arches, grottoes, coves, and secret passages leading to small beaches around the corners.
Just west of Praia do Alemão, you'll find the João de Arens rock formations, which provide a natural barrier against wind and waves. From either a drone or the cliffs above, you'll get an incredible view of this landscape, showcasing its rugged beauty and uniqueness.
